Hey Photographers!!
I get so many emails from beginner photographers asking me the same questions I decided it was time to write some blog posts geared towards them! So if you’re looking to break into photography and don’t really know where to start, these posts are going to be for you!
To start off, I’m going to talk about the gear! And while I’m a FIRM believer that it’s not allll about the gear and it’s about the person using it, it is a little bit about the gear.
I’m a Canon girl, so what I talk about will focus mostly around their products, but if you shoot with Nikon or Sony or something else, don’t worry! You really can’t go wrong with any brand, and should be able to find similar gear in any brand. Just be sure to do your research first!
So, what’s in my camera bag?
Camera bodies:
Canon 5D Mark IV
Canon 5D Mark III
Canon 6D
(I might have too many cameras)
Lenses:
Canon 70-200mm 2.8
Canon 85mm 1.2
Canon 50mm 1.4
Sigma Art 35mm 1.4
What do you use all these different lenses for, Melissa?
Great question, internet!
My 70-200mm is my go to ceremony lens. It’s perfect for getting up close and personal without being distracting to the ceremony. I always make sure to get a wide photo during the ceremony too, usually with my 35mm, but my 70-200mm is almost always on my camera for the whole ceremony.

I love my 85mm and 35mm for portrait time! I use my 35mm for bridal party and family portraits, and then switch between that and my 85mm for bride and groom portraits. They both produce beautiful, creamy backgrounds, and allow me to give my clients a variety of images that still have a cohesive feel.

Last but not least, my 50mm is my bread and butter for detail shots and reception time. Occasionally I’ll use it for portraits, but it’s mostly my detail queen! Dress, flowers, invitations, table setups, it’s perfect for all of that! I even use it for my ring shots too! (Blog post explaining how soon!)
