“Dreams, if they’re any good, are always a little bit crazy. ”
Ray Charles

Every year I make a list of my new (or old) wedding photography dreams. When I started in 2015 it was just for fun. Just a way to meet my weekly blog post quota when I didn’t have anything else to blog about. But as I would re-read that post over the year, and as I got ready to write my 2016 post, I realized that these lists became more than just silly day dreams. These became goals for progressing my business, my photography, and myself. These dreams are how I want to grow, new directions I want to take, new things I want to try. Ways to push myself on things I’m scared to do.

Last year I accomplished 3 of my 6 wedding photography dreams for 2016. And while 50% may not be a good score most of the time, I was really proud of that fact. Plus, it was way better than my 20% success rate of 2015.  Glass half full, right? Still, though, it’s not really about the “success rate.” I’m happy just to dream these little wedding photography dreams of mine, and if maybe, just maybe one or two of them come true, well, then that’s just icing on the cake really.

So this year, I’m dreaming big. Why not, right? Who’s stopping me? And even if none of these wedding photography dreams come true this year, that’s ok, because there’s always next year!

1. Photograph a destination wedding in Europe

I LOVE Europe, I love the history, the romance, the landscapes. All of it. Give it to me! I was lucky enough to travel to England, France, and Italy when I was 16 and I would die to go back. I was captivated then by everything I saw, and think about these stunning places that I saw and how amazing it would be to photograph someone there!

2. Photograph a destination wedding in Hawaii

Ever since I was a little girl I’ve had a fascination with Hawaii. It might have had something to do with a certain Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen movie. I was lucky enough to take 2 vacations to Oahu and Maui with my family, and fell even more in love with these gorgeous islands.

3. Photograph 3 destination weddings

Are you sensing a theme here? This year, I’d really like to photograph more destination weddings. They’re my favorite! Last year I photographed 3 destination weddings (yay!) and I’m hoping for the same number this year! Plus, I already photographed a destination wedding in Jamaica this year, so I’m 1/3 of the way there.

4. Photograph 2 destination engagement sessions

Ok, I know I sound like a broken record here, and I promise not all of these will be destination wedding related, but I LOVE the idea of traveling someplace new for your engagement photos! Especially if you’re having your wedding where you live.  You’ll get unique, extra special engagement photos without the price tag of a destination wedding. I’ve made a list of some of my dream places to go for destination engagement sessions with no travel fees, so check out my list and pack your bags!

5. Photograph a wedding at Mile High Station

I’m resurrecting this dream from my 2015 post. Mile High Station has been one of my favorite Colorado wedding venues since I started wedding photography, but I’ve never worked there. I love the industrial feel of the place and have all these ideas of beautiful photos I could create.

I don’t use the word windy as a negative here. Cody and Alyssa’s windy mountain engagement session was one for the books, and it was all thanks to that wind! Alyssa’s red dress was perfect. Literally perfect. It looked amazing on her, and that full skirt flowed beautifully in the wind. We had so much fun tossing it around to see where the wind would take it. It didn’t disappoint either, you’ll see.

Cody and Alyssa are dear friends of ours, and I was so honored when they asked me to do their engagement photos. I love being about to capture these sweet moments for people that I love! It’s the cherry on top of an already delicious I-love-my-job cake! They were also complete naturals in front of the camera, which is good, because even though the wind worked well for us, it can make posing challenging. Shouting instructions out over the wind doesn’t always work out well. Luckily, Cody and Alyssa didn’t need much coaching, so I only had to shout a few times.

I also totally loved that they both wore fox socks, completely unaware that the other was doing it. If that doesn’t say “perfect for each other” I don’t know what does.

This day! Where do I even start?! Mercy and Nick’s Jamaica Destination Wedding was one for the books, for sure! Personally, it was a pretty huge milestone for me. Not only was the wedding on my birthday, but it was also the 100th wedding I’ve photographed. Needless to say, I was pretty jazzed about this wedding from the get go, and I was not disappointed.

Mercy and Nick are the sweetest people, and they brought a whole bunch of equally sweet people down to Jamaica with them. I’ve been to plenty of weddings where I felt like I was one of the family (because my clients are amaze-balls) but I’ve never felt quite so welcomed as I did with Mercy and Nicks friends and family. People I had never met in my entire life were wishing me happy birthday! It was a an incredible way for me to celebrate my birthday! Not one second felt like work with these great people laughing, smiling, and dancing all around me!

The Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall Resort that Mercy and Nick chose for their Jamaica Destination Wedding was just the perfect spot! Crystal clear water and beautifully landscaped grounds set the perfect scene for their wedding day. And hey, it might have been windy as all get out, but there’s nothing like some wind in your dress to help get that perfect shot! You’ll know it when you see it!

Mercy and Nick, thank you from the bottom of my heart for including me in your Jamaica destination wedding. It was one of the highlights of my career and I am truly honored I got to be a part of your wedding. Congratulations!

And thank you Joanna! None of this would have happened without you!
